Goats fainting

02Oct06

Apparantly kid goats can ‘faint’ when they are scared, shocked or excited. Pretty weird, but really funny!

Not just any goats, but goats with a particular recessive gene, which expresses the dysfunction causing Myotonia Congenita.

Though the trigger is virtually identical to cataplexy (disorder found in persons and animals with narcolepsy), the mechanism is completely the opposite.

With cataplexy, the muscles are temporarily paralyzed and lose rigidity (tone). The muscles of myotonic goats contract, suddenly becoming rigid and tight.

I forgot to add that, the goats are perfectly alert and awake through it all. While the trigger or cause is in the brain, the condition only affects their muscles.
